Michelle Fernandes known as Meesh was born in London but has spent most of her adult life living in Leeds and Manchester, in September 2019 Meesh moved to Stamford where she has been able to rediscover her love for painting. Meesh studied Art and Design at college equivalent to a foundation level however she chose to pursue an education and career in social care working predominantly with care experiences children and young people and as an education welfare officer. These days Meesh works as a Registrar in Peterborough.
Meesh’s wife had sadly taken her own life in 2018 after a lengthy battle with her mental health. This life changing and extremely traumatic experience had triggered Meesh to move to Stamford, change her career and to start painting once again. Painting was initially a channel for expression during a time in her life where she felt she didn’t have adequate words to convey what was happening in her life and all that had happened. Meesh explains, “Initially the contrast of my emotions left me with a very sharp colour pallet of bright sometimes luminescence and very deep dark blues and blacks. This period in my painting process is no doubt still visible in some of my paintings today. Day to day work life and significant personal life experiences have definitely influenced my practice as an artist and continue to do so.”
Much of my work is a reflection on Meesh’s creative journey throughout the national lockdowns until now. Influenced by the uncertainty and isolation that we all felt during the lockdowns, this led Meesh to concentrate on the world around her and in her flat, the importance of communicating with people, the emotional impact of covid. And the various high profile news stories that have dominated our screens and minds and the emotional impacts of all of the above.
Meesh recently featured in Mall Galleries Figurative Art Now 2021 exhibition celebrating the Federation of British Artists 60th anniversary.
Meesh is a contestant on Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year 2021, series 8.
On the 27th October 2021.
